Hi,

We’re happy to announce the first beta release of a new series of lunar-linux
installer ISO’s. Our new ISO’s will be as easy to install as 1.6.1, but pack an extra punch: This series of ISO’s preinstalls a basic Xfce4-4.4.1 desktop with XOrg-7.2, together with firefox, Thunderbird, pidgin, audacious, gimp and a few other basic desktop utilities.

We hope to make it easy for everyone to both enjoy playing and learning from a true source distro environment and both be productive quickly. The extra applications will give new users a fast start and should install easily on most (even brand new) hardware with the 2.6.22.1 kernel, but also give the user a welcome feeling on a freshly installed lunar-linux system.

At 585MB, this is a remarkable ISO that provides a great desktop installation to start with. I myself enjoyed testing this ISO on new systems, where even the wireless and 3D (open source radeon driver) worked without any other user interaction except for the command `startxfce4`. Hopefully you are as lucky on your hardware

Hi,

With great pleasure we release “Moose Drool”, also known as the Lunar-Linux 1.6.1 Installer ISO in to the public.

This ISO is partially a refreshed installer for i686, but it is also our first stable ISO for x86_64. The x86_64 installer ISO thus marks the true final entry for Lunar Linux as a multi-arch distro. This ISO comes with gcc-3.4.6, glibc-2.3.6, linux-2.6.20, perl-5.8.8, and other rock solid base components.

Allthough the x86_64 ISO is purely 64-bit only now, we’re working behind the scenes to enable multilib, so stay focused for more news on that. This will also be the last iso with gcc-3.x. Future ISO’s will move to gcc-4.x and an updated glibc. Many more new things are to come!

Hi,

With great pleasure we release “Indium Antimonide”, also known as
the Lunar-Linux 1.6.0-i686 Installer ISO in to the public. After
over half a year of work on our first 2.6.x kernel based ISO series,
it is finally ready, and ready it is!

This is a major step forward from the 1.5.x series releases, adding a
lot of features to Lunar-Linux installs, such as SELINUX, NPTL threads,
udev, and more 2.6-kernel related improvements to the Linux OS.

This release also adds the user-friendly installer and refines it
greatly. It adds better hardware recognition and module loading
options, an easier way to setup compiles against kernel sources and
headers, and easier compile optimization management with a completely
pluggable package management tool. The installer is now also capable
of installing and initializing software RAID.

This ISO comes with gcc-3.4.5, glibc-2.3.6, linux-2.6.16, perl-5.8.8,
and other rock solid base components. New packages on this ISO are wipe
(secure data deletion), foremost (arbitrary data recovery tool), lftp
(popular request), a full vim, ethtool and dmidecode (for network
and hardware diagnostics).

The installer allows you to install pre-compiled kernels suitable
for most systems, and offers a wide choice, such as server-optimized
kernels, minimal, and desktop-lowlatency ones. Alternatively the user
can compile a kernel himself as with older releases. The installer
now also provides a fully configured kernel source tree.

changelog:
ChangeLog

Future work now concentrates on bringing an updated 2.4-based ISO
installer, and a x86_64 enabled one. Stay tuned for news on progress
with that.

Special thanks to the Lunar Team for making rock solid packages.
Kudos to my former employer for letting me go that easy, my wife for
bringing me to this new exciting place in the world and paying the
bills for the first three months while I worked on the foundation
of this ISO, and my new employer for paying me to work on Linux.
This last half year has been crazy, and it has been the best, thanks
to all of you!

Enjoy,

Installation ISO. As with rc1 and rc2, this is a testing release and
approaches the quality we are looking for in the -final release. A
lot of small bugs in rc1 and rc2 have been addressed making this an
extremely useful release.

This release has several feature enhancements over rc1 and rc2. The
most noticeable is the Linux Software RAID tool that allows you
to install Lunar on Software RAID easily. Precompiled SELINUX
enhanced kernels can now be installed, and the server-targeted
kernels should have better IO performance. The installer now uses
normal console logins and fully enabled shells.

We encourage everyone to report all bugs as soon as possible back to us
amount of time. We currently estimate this at 4 weeks.

Here is the second Release Candidate for the final 1.6.0-i686 series ISO. As with rc1, this is a testing release and approaches the quality we are looking for in the -final release. A lot of small bugs in rc1 have been addressed making this an extremely useful release.

Specifically, this release backups all packages to the installed system for recovery purposes. Dmidecode was added to aid hardware discovery – it shows a ton of handy output on your system’s hardware. Ethtool was added as well. The grsecurity kernels now actually are correctly built. A few popular lsi/ibm/dell raid drivers are now supported through modules (megaraid, mptspi, others). The precompiled server-targeted kernels were heavily optimized for throughput performance, greatly increasing PCI offload. Last one nasty hd selection bug was fixed.

lunar-1.6.0-i686-rc2 iso (255M)

Being the second release candidate I expect some minor bugs to surface once people start testing. Please file bugs accordingly in the tracker and mark them with the version of this release.

Dear all!

out of the blue I’m releasing a new lunar installation ISO RC, named
1.5.1 – “Gallium Arsenide”. Since I’m currently building a i386 version
and the i686 version has not seen extensive testing yet, I am releasing
the current state as RC1.

i686 download (240mb)
i386 download (220mb)

That should not withold anyone from trying to use this version or
actually use it for normal installation, but I would like to know that
this release candidate might not become the final release. Just so you know.

If no objections exist, RC1 will integrally become 1.5.1-i686-final.

This version fixes a few bugs with missing files in /etc/, and adds
support for displaying normal device names (/dev/sda, /dev/hda3 etc) in
the entire installer. Also, there are now proper default choices in the
language, font, charmap etc. menus to guide you. The network now starts
by default after installation.

The package list has been modified a bit and now includes wireless_tools,
lard as logging daemon, and xfs and reiserfs installs are now tested OK.
Plenty of minor adjustments were also made that are too countless to number.

Please make sure you verify the md5sums after downloading the iso. Here
are the URL’s of the Release Candidate 1 i686 ISO:

The final release should be out within 2 weeks.

enjoy!
